Oh hey there!

November 15, 2011

Oh wow it’s been a while huh?

Things have been really really really busy lately. It’s getting close to the end of the semester, so school is all “here you go, write an essay, write this test, write that test, write a report, and when you’re done that OH LOOK ANOTHER TEST!” I’ve got a lot of studying to do tonight but I’m trying to have a little me time right now to just decompress from the day so I might as well update while I’m sitting here.

Slowly but surely, I’m getting my legs back. I still use my cane at school but I can get around the house for the most part without one now, just leaning heavily on walls and such. It’s really weird. It’s like I’m having a really hard time getting my left leg coordinated again. When I’m using the cane I don’t really think about it anymore because I use my right arm for that, but when I have to actually concentrate on using my left leg again, things get tricky. Had a really bad day recently; I overdid it waaaay too much and woke up the next day numb from the waist and wrists down. Thankfully that’s eased up quite dramatically. My right leg is getting really sore from overcompensating for my screwy left leg so I really need to work on getting my left one working properly again. Sometimes I end up kicking the floor when I try to take a step forward with my left leg, or end up swining my leg in a big circle instead of just moving it forward. I stumble a lot, and the constant wobbling gets me very dizzy very quickly. I look drunk when I walk without my cane. This weekend I’m planning on starting to go for walks again though, starting out small then working up, gradually getting rid of the cane and going longer distances. Still have random numb spots throughout my body. Had about a week where my skin was just insanely itchy everywhere, drove me nuts, but thats quieting down a bit too.

Overall I’m pretty damn proud of how I’ve been doing. I’ve been managing to keep the house tidy, school full-time, work part-time, and am learning how to walk again on my own. Can’t wait until I can go through an entire day of classes without having to take out my cane. I think tomorrow I’m going to try to make it through the morning without it. I really don’t give a flying fuck what other people may think of me judging by my gait. I get stared at plenty as it is because of the cane.

I’m going to try to make things easier on myself next semester though. I’m going to get my binders and such organized ahead of time and stick to a specific style of note taking and whatnot. I’m going to see if I can get myself an ereader and get digital copies of my textbooks put on it so I won’t have to lug a ton of books around.
