Babinksi, thou art mine enemy

April 2, 2011

I think my “yay remission!” type posts were a bit premature. The tremors aren’t really back but the tingling is. My right index fingertip is completely numb, I just got the feeling back in my lips, and the waves of tingling (but no numbness) in my legs and face are getting more frequent (though not more severe). My back and shoulders were aching intolerably earlier so I took a hot bath with epsom salts to tame the pain a bit and took some over the counter pain medication. Something just popped into my head a few minutes ago from college (I don’t know why it did but oh well) so I decided to give it a shot.

Normally, when you’re awake and haven’t been walking a lot and are not an infant, if you drag an object along the bottom of your foot your toes will bunch up and curl downward. That’s a normal reflex (like your leg kicking when you tap on the proper spot of the knee). If your toes spread out and bend upward instead, something is not right. This abnormal reaction is called Babinski’s reflex or sign. Guess which reflex I have? When I saw my toes spread out and up, I wanted to throw up. Then I remembered my visit to my family doctor; she checked the reflexes in my knees, and they were completely nonexistant.

Something is definately wrong.
